Selby Botanical Garden

Take a break from the beach on your Siesta Key vacation and enjoy some of the other advantages of Florida’s tropical climate. Spend an afternoon at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, wandering the paths and taking in sights of both regional and international plant life.

Exploring Selby Botanical Garden

Situated along the bayfront, Selby Botanical Garden’s physical surroundings offer a serene environment for taking in the beauty of nature. This garden features air plants from around the world, as well as native plant species. Some of the garden’s highlights include giant banyan trees and a serene path lined by towering bamboo, both of which are reminiscent of what you may expect to find in Asia. The Steinwachs Family Foundation Mangrove Walkway takes visitors through a mangrove forest, providing views of red, black, and white mangroves and their intricate root systems. Along the way, take in views of Sarasota Bay, Bird Key, and downtown Sarasota.

Attractions that are especially great for families traveling with children include the Ann Goldstein Children’s Rainforest Garden and the Butterfly Garden. The Butterfly Garden was specially designed with the purpose of attracting butterflies, and here you will find butterflies year-round enjoying this natural habitat. Be sure to bring along your camera to capture memorable photos of the vibrant hues and intricate butterflies! In the Children’s Rainforest Garden, explore the elevated garden connected with swinging bridges. Feel as if you are on the forefront of discovery as you explore caves, a waterfall, canyon, and adventure trail.

Visit the onsite historic Selby House after you’ve worked up an appetite exploring the garden, where a quaint café is perfect for grabbing a sandwich, wrap, salad, bowl of soup, pastry, cookie, or other snacks. Wash it all down with a latte, glass of iced tea, or an option from their beer and wine selection. Enjoy your meal indoors or bring along a blanket to enjoy a picnic on the expansive South Lawn.

In addition to their regular exhibitions, Selby Botanical Garden Florida keeps a regularly rotating calendar of special events, ranging from activities such as yoga in the garden, watercolor painting, and an open-air light show, so be sure to check their calendar before your visit!
